Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, RA (British, 1802-1873), "Portrait of a Falconer and His Falcon," 19th c., oil on panel

Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, RA (British, 1802-1873), "Portrait of a Falconer and His Falcon," 19th c., oil on panel, signed lower left, with an "IMPROVED Flemish Ground Pannel Boards, Prepared by Rowney & Forster, Artists' Colourmen, 51, Rathbone Place, London" attached en verso, with an artist plaque and dates attached to the bottom of the frame, presented in an antique gilt and gesso frame,
H.- 13 7/8 in., W.- 10 1/4 in., Framed- H.- 21 in., W.- 17 1/2 in.

  • Condition: In overall good restored condition. Painting exhibits some light convex warping from innate shrinkage in wood support. There are a few small scattered losses to the lower left, exposing the white gesso ground. There is a small loss to the upper right corner and some abraiding to the top edge. Light blooming (white cloudiness) to varnish is present in the background of the upper right and lower right sides of the painting. Various craquelure is present throughout. There is poorly integrated "spots" of visible inpainting to the upper left background and to a x-form scratch to the lower left center (in the painted furniture). Under UV, there are a few layers of varnish that fluoresce green with inpainting to the background on the right side of the canvas (same areas that are blooming), and some small spots scattered throughout. Frame exhibits minor separation at mitered corners and small scattered losses to gilt and gesso at edges and trim.
